No you are right. After tax, duties, gas and harassment from the border guards sometimes you are better off getting shipped into Canada. If you do get it shipped to Canada MAKE SURE THE SHIPPER USES USPS (US Postal Service) as UPS, Fedex all charge you around $30-50 for brokerage fee on top of duties and taxes.
If you are shipping to the border using Blaine Enterprises ($3 CDN handling charge) or TSB ($3USD handling charge) you have to bring it across the border declare it or ask the seller to declare it as a gift. I would just be careful when you bring over new in box items as they will ask questions at the border.
This is from my own experience and usually I have items shipped to Canada to me unless it is an expensive item where I want to avoid expensive shipping, duties and taxes, then I get it shipped to the border.
